We hope you love your new install and can’t wait to see you at your next maintenance appointment. To get the best out of your new install please follow our aftercare advice below.
Products
Hair Extensions need to be given a little more attention and care than your natural hair. Your new extensions need a professional product to ensure they are in optimum condition for us to be able to reuse them at your next maintenance appointment. Below are some of our recommendations, all available online.
Brushing
A specialist hair extension brush
Shampoo (please note shampoo needs to be sulphate-free)
A sulphate free shampoo is necessary and your stylist will recommend the best shampoo for your hair type.
London and UK water is very harsh and can affect hair colour, so silver or purple shampoo is recommended to brighten the colour of your hair. Read the instructions on the packet carefully before use, and always test any new product on a small section of the extensions first before using it on the whole head.
Conditioner
Moroccanoil Moisture Repair Conditioner (We love this for blonde hair!)
Conditioning Mask
Use a conditioning hair mask at least once a week. Some of our clients like to use a mask after every hair wash instead of using conditioner.
Serum
Biosilk Silk Therapy Original Serum or
Olaplex No 7 Bonding Oil
Toner
Toner can be used to bring back the natural colour. We recommend that you have a toner treatment every two months.
We recommend this is booked at the same time as your maintenance appointment.
We also recommend sleeping on a silk pillowcase or having a silk scarf to sleep on to help prevent any matting.
How to look after your install
Washing
We recommend washing your extensions a few times a week. When washing hair please ensure:
Hair is washed under the shower rather than tipping your head over the bath.
Water is not too hot for the hair. The water should be a comfortably warm temperature with a decent water pressure.
Gently shampoo the area where the extensions are installed, then bring the hair to the side and squeeze the shampoo through.
No intense rubbing or massaging as this will create matting.
Use plenty of water to wash the shampoo out as residue left in the bonds can create itchiness and the bonds can deteriorate.
Condition from the mid-section downward, leaving out the bond area, and leave on for about 10 minutes.
Brushing
Hair is most vulnerable when it is wet so please take care when brushing. It is important to:
Never brush the hair when it is sopping wet. It is best to brush the hair before you go into the shower, and then only brush again when the hair is at least 80% dry.
Always use a specialist hair extension brush when brushing your (at least) 80% dry hair.
Hold the bonds at the top and gently brush through always working in a downward direction, starting from the bottom up to prevent tension on the hair.
Always be very gentle when brushing the hair. As blonde hair can be more fragile than the darker shades it does need to be handled with a bit more care. Any vigorous brushing can result in shedding or can cause the extensions to slip down/come out. This can also cause damage to the natural hair.
Drying
To ensure hair condition is maintained we recommend using moderate heat on the hair. Please remember:
Medium heat and strong speed is perfect.
Dry bonds thoroughly.
Do not use heated tools over 185° when you are styling the hair, and do not hold the heated tools over each section of hair for more than 10-12 seconds.
Once you have dried your hair it is usual to see the difference between your natural hair and the extensions. This does show what a difference styling can make when you have hair extensions.
Do not go to bed with wet hair. Ensure the hair is bone dry before you go to sleep.
Plait hair before going to bed. This is especially important if you have blonde hair.
Here at Taylor Rose Hair we offer a bespoke service and have always chosen to use soft tipped hair rather than factory-made extensions. We believe this gives the best results for our clients; however, this does mean that our extensions need to be looked after in a specific way. This may mean that our extensions need to be treated differently from those installed in other salons.
It is really important to separate each bond at the scalp to stop any of them joining or matting together. It is good to get into the habit of doing this three times a day, for approximately 30 seconds each time.
Never play with the metal beads at the top of your extensions. If you do then this can cause shedding, or the extensions may start to slide out at unwanted times, and this can also cause trauma to your natural hair.
If using straighteners please do not put them over the join of your extensions where the tip meets the metal bead. This may compromise the bond of the extensions and cause them to slip out, and can result in serious issues when it is time to remove your extensions. This is also likely to result in natural hair loss. It can also be unsafe for an electrical appliance to touch anything that is made of metal.
Important information for blonde hair:
Avoid any exposure to chlorine and saltwater as this can seriously change the colour and texture of your blonde hair.
Please do not allow sunscreen to touch your hair while you are wearing extensions. This can cause serious discoloration to blonde hair and can turn the hair orange.
We do not recommend visiting saunas/steam rooms once you have had your extensions installed. This type of environment can cause unwanted stickiness within the hair, and can also result in serious slippage and even the loss of some/all of your extensions.
We recommend that all of our clients have maintenance appointments every six-to-ten weeks to help keep their extensions in great condition. For these maintenance appointments you will have the option to either have the extensions retipped, or to have your maintenance appointment without having this done. We do strongly recommend that you have your extensions retipped as this can help to reduce future shedding of the extensions.
Over time extensions can become shorter/thinner/drier and, with coloured hair, the colour can change. UK and in particular London hard water can create a change in the colour of the extensions. A colour hair mask/conditioner can bring the colour back. However, some of our customers have said that they actually like the way the colour ‘lifts’ after exposure to hard water.
Please do not attempt to remove the extensions yourself unless you have already discussed this with a member of staff at Taylor Rose Hair. We strongly recommend that you make an appointment for the extensions to be removed here at the salon to avoid/minimise damage to the natural hair. There is also the option to have the existing extensions re-tipped and reinstalled.
Due to the unique nature of our service, and the way that our staff are trained, and also the way we create our soft-tipped extensions, any future services should be carried out by Taylor Rose Hair. We look forward to seeing you at the salon for your future appointments, but if that really is not possible, particularly for our international clients, if you ever do need to book in with another salon it is strongly advised that one of our stylists speaks to the other salon before your appointment there. Please be aware that another salon is unlikely to be familiar with our unique installation method, even if they do extensions themselves. Therefore, other salons may not understand how to work with the extensions that we have installed, and problems may occur. Please get in touch if you need to discuss this.
We love to hear back from our satisfied customers. We are happy to help and always want to ensure that you are fully satisfied with your extensions. We are always on hand to give more information so please don’t hesitate to contact us anytime between your appointments if needed.
